Cookie Sales - What Do the Girls Learn?

Here we go again!  It's Cookie Sales Time!  It's a time that I, personally, kind of dreaded last year -- will we sell anything?  How much work is this going to be, really? What if my daughter sets an outrageous goal?  All good questions.  We did very well selling last year -- especially as a group.  We did both pre-sales and booth sales and sold over 2000 boxes! [We will set a goal for each girl and our troop to exeed that.] The booth sales really helped and I know that Maggie really enjoyed selling cookies (especially at the zoo).  Last year, we were able to earn enough money to go to Build-a-Bear and give some to the Zoo.

One of the goals of our next meeting will be to start talking with the girls about a Service Project and a Fun Event to use this money.  We will also reserve some of the money to help pay for events, supplies, badges, etc throughout the year.

So what does this do for our girls?  Selling Cookies is so much more than just earning money for the troop!

There are 5 Skills each girl learns as part of her Cookie Business:

Goal Setting: each girl (and our troop) will set a sales goal and will develop a plan to reach it
Decision Making: as a troop, we will decide how to spend the money we earn
Money Management: each girl is responsible for taking cookie orders and collecting money when the cookies are delivered -- and of course at this age, we to expect that you will play a large part in the money management
People Skills: The girls learn how to talk and listen to all kinds of people while selling cookies [it was so much fun to watch them at the booth, with their little "Um, excuse me, would you like to buy some cookies?"]
Business Ethics: The girls learn how to be honest and responsible at every step of cookies sales.

As part of the Cookie Rally (Satuday January 12) and our next meeting, we will help the girls expand on these 5 skills they learned last year and start working on the Cookie Activity pin and patches at each level that are associated with Financial Literacy.
